Combat operations of the Security Forces have
reached a successful conclusion, said a statement issued by the
Presidential Secretariat yesterday. The humanitarian rescue mission,
however, to free the remaining 15,000 to 20,000 held hostage by the
LTTE will continue until the last civilian is rescued.

Sir John Holmes meets President:
UN releases US $ 10 million to relief fund
United Nations Under-Secretary-General for
Humanitarian Affairs and UN Emergency Relief Coordinator Sir John
Holmes, who is on a two-day visit to Sri Lanka met President Mahinda
Rajapaksa at Temple Trees yesterday evening and had discussions on
the current situation in the North and United Nations activities
there. The discussions were held in an atmosphere of cordiality and
friendship.

Prasanna Ranatunga tops WPC preference votes
Former Provincial Minister Prasanna Ranatunga
secured 186,338 preference votes, the highest in the Gampaha
district and in the entire Western Province from the UPFA. Nimal
Lansa received 76,156 votes, the seconed highest in the Gampaha
District for the UPFA.
