Muslims will support President - Azwer

The biggest Sinhala- Hindu New year gift received by President Mahinda Rajapaksa this year was from Libya.

It was evident that the deep affection and a long standing friendship between the two leaders when they met at the Desert Tent of Libyan leader in Serthe, ex-Minister of Islamic Religious Affairs A.H.M. Azwer said, addressing supporters of the United People’s Freedom Front at the Queens Inn hall at Matugama.

Azwer said the Muslims of this country have now realized their folly in voting for UNP as the present UNP leadership has no regard for the religious and cultural aspirations of the Muslims. “The UNP leader never said a word to support the Palestinian cause. He is the only political leader who failed to condemn the brutal attack of the LTTE on the peaceful religious march at Godapitiya-Akuressa to mark the Meelad-un-Nabi celebrations.

“President Mahinda Rajapaksa had always taken a bold stand in expressing solidarity with the Palestinian problem consistently for the last 30 years,” he said.

Sri Lanka is the only non-Muslim country that broadcast Azan (call to Prayer) through its national broadcasting stations. The whole world admires this courtesy paid to adherents of the Islamic religion.

“Today, you can observe a definite change in the attitude of Muslims in this country and they are eagerly awaiting to express their gratitude to President Mahinda Rajapaksa at the forthcoming election of the Western Provincial Council,” Azwer said.
