FM welcomes envoy's statement

Foreign Minister Rohitha Bogollagama yesterday welcomed the statement made by UN Ambassador for Mexico Claude Heller at the United Nations Security Council's (UNSC) informal session on Wednesday.

Mexico in its capacity as the UNSC president has strongly condemned the LTTE's terrorist atrocities and urged it to renounce violence and enter the democratic political process, the minister said.

The Minister stressed that the Government is seriously concerned about the humanitarian aspect of the civilians who have been trapped by the LTTE. "As a responsible government, we are taking all possible efforts to ensure that civilians who have come into cleared areas are enjoying better facilities."

He said the International Community concerned about the civilians' plight has understood the Government's unwavering commitment for civilians' welfare finally.
