Archbishop disowns leaflet

A forged letter purported to be from the Archbishop Rt. Rev. Dr. Oswald Gomis had been circulated among the Roman Catholic clergy of the Western Province with the request to line up against the Government in an effort to defeat the UPFA at this week’s Provincial Council elections of the Western Province.

However His Lordship the Bishop had informed all ‘Catholic clergy that the election propaganda leaflet did not originate from the Archbishop’s House, Colombo and the leaflet should not be distributed by the clergy among their congregations.

The Archbishop also emphasized in his letter to the clergy that the church strongly maintains neutrality leaving it to the Catholic faithful to exercise their franchise according to the dictates of their conscience.
