Victory over US trained invadors:
Cuba celebrates Playa Giron victory
Cuba: Cuba celebrated yesterday the 48th Anniversary of its victory
over an invading force of 1,500 men, equipped, trained and financed by
the United States government.
The ceremony will be held in Playa Giron, in the South of the
Matanzas province, 112 miles southeast of Havana, the last stronghold of
the invaders, who were defeated in less than 72 hours.
People from the Zapata Swamp, the main theater of operation of the
Bay of Pigs invasion in April, 1961, will take part in the
political-cultural rally to be attended by militia members, officers and
military chiefs who participated in the combative actions.
As part of the activities to commemorate the anniversary, 50
prominent youth from different social spheres will make a bicycle tour
of the region on Saturday and will hold meetings with participants in
those military events.
Meanwhile, the Korimakao community theater group will offer a gala
performance in the town of Palpite on Saturday night.
This rough area, where the largest swamp in the insular Caribbean is
located, has around 9,000 people in 20 towns, with a population density
of two inhabitants per 247 acres. With an economy based on the forestry,
tourism, fishing, and beekeeping, the environment has changed.
