Help save his life

S. Douglas Fernando of 45/5, M.J.C. Mawatha, Horethuduwa, Moratuwa is suffering from a critical ailment in the brain and specialist doctor Nihal Wijewardene of National Hospital, Colombo has recommended a surgery to cure this disease. The estimated cost is Rs. 900,000 which this poor patient is unable to meet within his limited income from his temporary employment.

He seeks public assistance to raise this sum of money for perform the surgery which will save his life.

New Year race ends in tragedy for cyclist

A cyclist who had come first in several cycle races in the past succumbed to his injuries after his cycle went off the road and hit a culvert.

The deceased was identified as Nimal Perera, 46, a father of two from Kottapitiya.

Perera’s cycle had gone off the road while participating in a New Year cycle race organised by the Segala Sumaga Welfare Society on Saturday. Hingurakgoda Police are investigating.


Motorist killed in crash

A motorist Kumudu Chandrakantha Silva Abeygunawardena (47) a senior engineer attached to Diesel - Power House, Sapugaskanda, Kelaniya died on admission to the National Hospital, Colombo, when his car collided head - on with a Diesel bowser at Galpoththa junction Makola on the Makola - Kiribathgoda road last Saturday morning.

According to the police he has driven the car from Kiribathgoda towards Makola at high speed. On the instructions of OIC Sapugaskanda Police, Sgts Prematilleke, Deepthi Ratnayaka and PC Udayakantha of the Traffic branch of the Sapugaskanda police are making further inquiries.


‘Law of Affidavits’ launched

The first copy of the Law book titled “Law of Affidavits” aurthored by Senior Attorney-at-Law D.A.P. Weeratna and his two daughters, attorneys - Jayanie and Vihara, was presented to the Supreme Court Judge Justice Saleem Marsoof, PC at a simple ceremony at the Justice Marsoof’s chambers recently.

Although affidavits have been in vogue in this country for centuries, and a large number of decisions have been pronounced by our Courts on this important subject, there has hitherto been a serious lacuna in our legal literature due to the absence of a systematic study of the relevant statutory provisions dealing with affidavits in this light of these judicial decisions. ‘Law of Affidavits’ is therefore very valuable and fulfils a long felt need, said Justice Saleem Marsoof PC.

Book launch - Kauwama Watura

The Bishop of Colombo Rt. Rev. Duleep Chickera will preside at the launch of the book Kauwama Watura, the life of Jesus Christ in Sinhala verse by the late Rev. William Jacob Wijesinghe at the Diocesan Council Auditorium at 5.30 p.m on April 22 at the premises of the Church of Christ the Living Saviour at Baudhaloka Mawatha, Colombo 7.

The late Rev. Wijesinghe was a renowned Sinhala scholar who was awarded a scroll naming him Sri Kawiswara by the Mahanayakes of the Malwatte and Asgiriya Chapters.

Road repair boon to residents

Bandaranaike Mawatha in Ginigathena town in the Ambagamuwa DS division in the Nuwara Eliya district has been reconstructed by the Ambagamuwa Divisional Secretariat under the government’s Gama Neguma program.

The Ministry of Nation Building and Estate Infrastructural Development funded Rs. 1,000,000 for reconstruction of the road which was in a dilapidated state during the past several years.


Bridge in need of repair

The Pathadumbara Madawala Watawanguwa bridge near Madeena Central College, along the Madawala Kandy road is in a dilapidated condition. One side of the bridge is damaged.

The residents of the area, say that this bridge is about 60 years old and if urgent repairs are not carried out it could collapse.


Water projects a failure

The community water projects which the Government launched in Matale district are a failure and is causing many problems to the people in the district.

This failure is due to the corruption and malpractices by those who have been entrusted with implementing this project.

Legal action should be taken against those responsible.


UNP loan request forgotten

The UNP has forgotten that the last UNP regime has requested a loan from the IMF with the promise of selling government institutions, said Finance and State Revenue Minister Ranjith Siyambalapitiya.

He also added that this government is going to obtain a loan from the IMF without any condition and it is a surprise to know that Opposition condemns this act.

Minister Siyambalapitiya expressed these views at the opening ceremony of a new iron bridge constructed inplace of old bridge at Panamkumbura in Kotiyakumbura - Bogala road in Galigamuwa electorate.

This bridge costs six million rupees. Bogala Graphite Limited has provided necessary equipment and the labour. The minister thanked them for their assistance.

Sabaragamuwa Provincial Councillors Saman Jayasingha, Harsha Siyambalapitiya and chief executive officer of Bogala Graphite Limited Sydney Jayasingha also participated.


Poachers make a fast buck

During this festive season flesh of wild animals are being sold in Tissamaharama, Lunugamwehera and Kataragama areas over the counter and in public places without any respect for the existing rules and regulations.

According to the Assistant Wildlife Director who is in charge of Kataragama, Yala and Bundala P.M. Dharmatillaka four suspects who slaughtered several deer were taken into custody. These wild animals were killed at Kavantissapura in Tissamaharama.


Will curd turn sour?

The curd industry and the pot of curd the pride of Ruhunu Magam Pattu and Ruhunu Giruwa Pattu is now facing a crisis due to various reasons.

The illicit transport of buffaloes from Hambantota district to other districts, illicit slaughter of buffaloes in alarming numbers and lack of land for grazing which is a burning problem in the district.

Cattle and buffalo thieves have contributed greatly towards the crises in the curd industry.
