Driver flees to Lanka after knocking down Aussie granny
The family of a Melbourne grandmother killed by a speeding driver
from Sri Lanka has called for justice after discovering the offender
fled Australia scot-free.
Pensioner Concertta Mammino, 66, died after she was struck by a car
that allegedly had ignored the red light, metres from her Malvern East
home. The driver had allegedly been talking on his mobile.
The driver, a foreign student, was interviewed by police in relation
to at least seven charges including failing to drive without a qualified
driver, failure to display L-plates, disobeying a red light and driving
in a dangerous manner. But he was not charged and fled the country the
day after Mammino's funeral. Victoria Police has confirmed the man,
believed to be a Sri Lankan aged in his 20s, left Melbourne bound for
Sri Lanka in January.
Despite contacting Interpol, police have had no contact with him.
