Troops on alert to rescue trapped civilians

Security Forces are monitoring LTTE activities in the No Fire Zone (NFZ) surrounding from three directions and waiting to rescue trapped civilians, Military spokesman Brigadier Udaya Nanayakkara said.

Over 101 civilians fleeing the LTTE sought protection with the Security Forces in Puthumathalan and Chalai throughout Thursday.

Around 69,000 displaced civilians crossing LTTE lines have reached cleared areas. “We have made all arrangements to meet the exodus and provide them with essentials once they reach the cleared area,” he added.

Forces have stopped launching attacks and are closely monitoring LTTE activities.
