Wasantha Udanaya in Bandarawela
Wasantha Udanaya 2009 organised by the Uva Provincial Education,
Local Government and Tourism Ministry with the patronage of the
Bandarawela Urban Council and the Pradeshiya Sabhawa will be held from
April 17 to 22.
This program will feature covering handicraft exhibition, flower
shows, sale of Ranaviru Upahara cards, police kennel show and the New
year festival around Bandarawela town during this week.

Gunaratna takes oaths as Myanmar ambassador
Veteran journalist Newton Gunaratna took oaths as the Ambassador to
the Union of Myanmar last week. The new ambassador presented his
Credentials to Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council of
Myanmar, Senior General Than Shwe on April 1.
Gunaratna started his career as a journalist from the grassroots
level. In 1994, he was appointed Independent Television Network (ITN)
Chairman.
He started Lakhanda FM radio station during his tenure at ITN.
President Mahinda Rajapaksa appointed him as the Presidential Advisor
on media relations. Gunaratna is the first broadcaster to be appointed
as an ambassador representing Sri Lanka.
PC, athlete indicted
SANDASEN MARASINGHE
A Police Constable of the President’s Security Division (PSD)and a
SAAF medal winning athlete were indicted before the Colombo High Court
for accepting a Rs. 600,000 ransom.
The Attorney General has filed indictment against Police Constable
S.A. Nihal Jayantha, SAAF medal winner H.P. Waruna Ranga Kumara
Wimalawansa and three-wheeler driver Kapuru Bandarage Don Susantha for
accepting a Rs 600,000 ransom.
According to the indictment, the three had allegedly conspired to
threaten Sampath Abeysinghe with death and accepted a ransom of Rs
600,000.
They had accepted the ransom on or around August 8, 2008. Nineteen
productions were enlisted in the indictment including a uniform of a
Police Inspector.
Bak Maha Ulela
The Bak Maha Ulela organised by Dehiwala-Mount Lavinia Municipal
Council under the patronage of Mayor Sunethra Ranasinghe will be held on
April 9 at the S.D.S. Jayasinghe Playground, Dehiwala.
New Year festival
The Dambadeni Wasantha Udana New Year festival organised by the
Dambadeni Export Village incorporating 213 villages in the Dambadeniya
electorate will be held on April 23 at 9 a.m. at the
Narammala-Dambadeniya Export Village.
Awards ceremony
The school prefects of Hindu College, Ratmalana, who completed
Ordinary Level Examinations last year will be awarded certificates at
7.45 a.m. today at the College Sivakami Hall by College Principal N.
Manmatharajan. The school cricket team will also be introduced at this
event.
Islamic Day
The Cathedral Boys College, Colombo 13 will hold its annual Islamic
Day and prize giving celebration on April 7 at 10.30 a.m. at the College
Hall.
Poya lecture
The Conference of Sri Lankan Malays (COSLAM) will conduct the monthly
Islamic lecture series ‘In the Shade of the Holy Qur’an’ at the YMMA

Businessman shot: Rs. 1 m robbed
Rafik Jalaldeen
A businessman was shot dead and his driver injured when they were
robbed by unidentified suspects in Galawila road, Homagama yesterday.
H.G. Jayawardana (56), a hardware shop owner in Galawila was killed
and robbed by two unidentified motorcyclists around 11.45am.
The robbers fled from the area grabbing Rs. one million. Homagama
police is investigating. |
