Former Minister E. L. B. Hurulle dead
Former Minister and veteran politician E.L.B. Hurulle passed away
yesterday. He was 90 at the time of his death.
He first entered Parliament in 1956 by contesting from the
Horowpathana electorate of Anuradhapura district. He was undefeated and
a Member of Parliament from 1956 to 1970. He also functioned as the
Transport Minister in the then Dudley Senanayake Government from 1965 to
1970.
He did not represent Parliament from 1970 to 1977 . Hurulle who
contested the 1977 General Election from the Horowpathana electorate was
re-elected as a Member of Parliament. He represented Parliament from
1977 to 1988.
He served as the Cultural Affairs Minister in the J.R. Jayewardene
Government from 1977 to 1988. He also functioned as the North Central
Province Governor in 1988. He was appointed as the High Commissioner to
Australia in 1991 and retired from active politics in 1994.
He was a father of five. One of his sons Themiya Hurulle has also a
Member of Parliament representing the Anuradhapura district from 1989 to
1994.
His remains are lying at A.F. Raymond Funeral Parlour. Funeral takes
place at the General Cemetery, Borella on April 8 at 6.30 p.m. |
