'Professionals have a significant role in informing Government
initiatives'
Export Development and International Trade Minister Prof. G. L.
Peiris said professionals have a significant role to play in informing
the public of the Western Province of the Government's development
programs and the steps taken to eliminate terrorism that had plagued the
country for three decades.
The Minister said the professionals were the most suitable group
though which the United People's Freedom Alliance could take its message
relating to the Western Provincial Council Elections, to the people of
Colombo district.
He said this was because the people of the country value the opinion
of the economic, legal, medical, and financial sector professionals.
Prof. Peiris, who is the Head of Operations of Western Province Zone
2, was speaking at an interactive seminar entitled 'The Current
Situation in Sri Lanka - challenges and opportunities' which he had
organised.
This was organised with the objective of obtaining inputs of
professionals in relation to future political, economic and social
activities of the government.
This meeting was held on Friday, April 3, at the Lakshman Kadirgamar
Institute of International Relations and Strategic Studies, with the
participation of a large number of professionals from sectors such as
medicine, law, engineering, management, accountancy and architecture and
university lecturers / professors. The Minister said, "The outstanding
feature of the Government of Mahinda Rajapaksa is that it is involved in
development and welfare while engaging in a war to rid the country of
terrorism. It provides funds for infrastructure and large projects.
The Government started the Moragahakanda project. It has also stated
the Upper Kotmale, Norochcholai and Uma Oya projects that were dormant
for over 10 years. 450 megawatts will be added to the national grid
within the next 16 months.
The dividends of such initiatives will be mainly felt by the people
of the Colombo district. Colombo is the heart of the economy. |
