Alleged rape of woman:

Minister vehemently condemns

Child Development and Women Empowerment Minister Sumedha G. Jayasena has vehemently condemned the incident where a 43-year-old woman who had come to lodge a complaint had been allegedly raped by a Sub Inspector and a Police Constable after luring her into a hotel.

Minister said such incidents compelled the Ministry to reconsider bringing in legislation to recommend the death sentence for rapists.

Minister Jayasena in a press release said mean individuals of this nature were a disgrace to all men.

Earlier attempts by the Ministry to introduce legislation recommending the death sentence to rapists did not materialise due to protests by legal quarters and other sections.

But now the Ministry may have to reconsider introducing such legislation again.
