The garbage problem that affected the Colombo city for the past few
days has now been addressed by the Colombo Municipal Council as a new
dumping site at Peliyagoda was found, Municipal Commissioner, Colombo,
Bhadrani Jayawardena told the Daily News yesterday.
She said the authorities including Chief Justice Sarath N.Silva,
Urban Development Minister Dinesh Gunewardena and UDA Chairman Prasanna
Silva had been a strength to resolve the garbage problem.
The new five acre site at Peliyagoda was now being used to dump the
city garbage and each layer of garbage was covered with earth using
bulldozers
Private contractors were no longer involved in clearing the garbage
but the Municipal authorities were directly supervising the dumping of
garbage, she said.
