Fonterra Brands Lanka opened its Rs.1.2 billion new yoghurt
manufacturing plant in Biyagama yesterday, a media release from the
company said.
The new facility will enable the dairy company to collect a further
8,000 litres of fresh milk from local dairy farmers per day. The
increase in local milk will be made into an extra six million cups of
existing and new types of yoghurt for Sri Lankans.
Fonterra Brands Lanka Managing Director Achyut Reddy said the opening
was a key milestone for the company. “We have already invested in three
new milk collection centres and equipment that will help Fonterra
collect raw milk from up to 3,000 more dairy farmers.
“We will continue to invest in education programs and technical
training to help our local supplier base increase production by
improving pasture yields and better breeding,” he said.
The new facility builds on the company’s existing yoghurt
manufacturing plant, and will increase production capacity by up to 40
percent and help the company meet the growing demand for yoghurt and
cultured products in Sri Lanka. Sri Lankans are now eating their way
through 40 per cent more yoghurt year on year. |
