The connection between Labour Minister Dr. Mervyn Silva's family and
the D.A. Rajapaksa family goes back to around 80 years, Ports and
Aviation, Irrigation and Water Management Minister Chamal Rajapaksa
said.
Rajapaksa introduced Dr. Mervyn Silva as a powerful personality and a
brave patriot.
Minister Rajapaksa was speaking at a ceremony organised by Lanka Mass
Communicators Foundation to felicitate Dr. Silva's 25 years in politics
at the BMICH on March 25.
Dr. Silva's father, William Silva made very significant contribution
to the SLFP. Dr. Silva continued to extend the same support to the party
without any hesitation. His father's support was very helpful for any
political campaign organised to defeat rival political elements. Similar
service was rendered by Dr. Silva, Minister Rajapaksa said.
He followed the middle path in politics. Even when the party faced a
setback his performances were quick and tactful.
In 1967, President Mahinda Rajapaksa was assisted by Dr. Silva in the
election campaign and supported the victory. Today, both Dr. Silva and
himself are in Parliament.
Rajapaksa said Dr. Silva started his career at the CWE and led the
SLFP trade union with majority support and won workers' rights.
Addressing the ceremony, Urban Development and Sacred Area
Development Minister Dinesh Gunawardena said Dr. Silva's role at the
reopening of SLFP Headquarters which was sealed under the UNP Government
should be highly appreciated.
Minister Gunawardena appreciated his contribution to the development
of Kelaniya Sacred area as the Chief Organiser of the electorate. Health
and Nutrition Minister Nimal Siripala de Silva also spoke.
