Sixty baby elephants raised at the Udawalawe Elephant Care Centre were released to the Udawalawe National Park recently. There are 33 baby elephants and 23 have foster parents with each baby elephant requiring Rs. 25,000 per month to look after. The balance 10 baby elephants are in search of foster parents and anyone can apply for this foster parenthood. Baby elephants abandoned or injured in jungles are brought into this elephant camp where they are treated and prepared for release to jungles.

Sequel to measures taken by Govt:

Lanka’s economy to grow around 5.5% in 2009

Sri Lanka’s economy is expected to grow around 5.5 percent in 2009 following the measures taken by the government to improve the liquidity of the financial sector, introduction of the stimulus package and further strengthen domestic demand, said Deputy Director, Institute of Policy Studies, Dr Dushni Weerakoon said.
