Cop gets two years' RI for bribe

Colombo High Court Judge Kusala Sarojini Weerawardene yesterday
sentenced a Police Constable to 24 months rigorous imprisonment after he
was convicted for accepting a bribe.
The Court convicted A.M.S. Saminda Adikaram of Udammita, Veyangoda
after he pleaded guilty of accepting a bribe of Rs 70,000 while he was
attached to Ganemulla Police.
According to indictment filed by the Commission to Investigate
Allegations of Bribery and Corruption, Adikaram had demanded and
accepted the incentive in April 2007 from D.R. Chanaka Senaratne of
Ganemulla to refrain from taking legal action against Senaratne for
keeping illicit liquor in his possession.
The Court suspended the sentence for 10 years and imposed a fine of
Rs. 20,000 and another four months RI in default.
