ADB loan for SEMP II

The Ministry of Education has received a loan from the Asian
Development Bank (ADB) towards the investment of the Secondary Education
and Modernization Project II (SEMP II) and Education for Knowledge
Society Project (EKSP). The Government has declared 2009 as the "Year of
IT and English".
As part of this nationwide initiative, the Ministry of Education
recently signed an MoU with Metropolitan Office (Pvt) Ltd, for the
supply of furniture requirement consisting of Computer Tables and
Computer Chairs as well as other related types of steel and timber
furniture for Computer Laboratory Centres and Language Centres in
Government schools in all provinces of the country.
The furniture that will also benefit schools in the war torn north
and east of the country is valued at over Rs. 60 million.
Project Director of SEMP and EKSP Projects Anura Disanayake that
funds made available for the development of IT and English language
knowledge have to be prudently utilized for the optimum benefit of the
country and the student population.
He said th at there are many needy schools in all districts and
provinces including the conflict ridden North and East of the country
and that the Government was resolved to upgrade the standards in all
these schools to bring it on par with the other popular schools in the
country. |
