Man gets seven years' RI, fine

Matara High Court Judge Preethi Padman Surasena sentenced Aruna Ruwan Ekanayake, 28 of Bamunukotuwa, Pothuwewa to seven years' vigorous imprisonment and fined Rs. 50,000 in default of a further term of one year's rigorous imprisonment, when he was found guilty of committing the robbery of a van valued at Rs. 900,000 and Rs. 1,800.

According to the prosecution, on June 16, 2002, the accused had taken the van on hire and committed the theft having forced the driver to leave his vehicle.

Later, the Galle Port Police discovered the vehicle abandoned in Galle.

Attorney-at-Law Chaturanga Mahawaduge led the prosecution while Attorney-at-Law Dasaraj Dassanayake defended.


Town Planners sessions

The Annual Sessions of the Institute of Town Planners Sri Lanka will be held today from 9 a.m. at Level 26, World Trade Centre, Colombo .

The Chief Guest is Urban Development and Sacred Area Development Minister Dinesh Gunawardena and the Guest of Honour is Local Government and Provincial Councils Minister Janaka Bandara Tennakoon.


Blood donation

A blood donation campaign for the benefit of war-wounded members of the armed forces will be held at the precincts of the Sama Viharya, Anurdhapura on March 22 Sunday at 8.30 a.m.

The Anuradhapura Friendship Foundation organized by the students of Ananda and Nalanda Colleges, Colombo have organized the event.


Azwer on 'Sunny Manjari'

Presidential Advisor on Parliamentary Affairs A. H. M. Azwer will be featured in a special Sunny Manjari program over ITN today at 11.30 a.m.

He will discuss the outcome of the Provincial Council elections already held and the expectations of the voters at the forthcoming Western Provincial Council election with M. Siddique Haniffa of ITN.


Pakistan National Day

The Pakistan High Commission along with the people of Sri Lanka and the Pakistani community in Sri Lanka will celebrate National Day of Pakistan on March 23.

The day will be marked with a flag hoisting ceremony at 9.30 am at the

Pakistan High Commission premises, 53/6, Gregory Road, Colombo.

High Commissioner of Pakistan to Sri Lanka Shaheen A. Gilani, will hoist the National Flag of Pakistan.


Annual convention

The annual convention of the All Ceylon Union of Muslim League Youth Fronts (ACUMLYF) will be held today at 3.00 p.m. at the Nagarodaya Centre, 155, Baseline Road, Borella, Colombo 8.

Education Minister Susil Premajayanth and Karu Jayasuriya, MP will be the Chief Guest and Guest of Honour. Muslim Ministers, MPs, Ambassadors of Muslim countries and special invitees will also participate.


Minifair at Buddhist Ladies

The Old Girls' Association of Buddhist Ladies College, Colombo will hold a minifair on April 3, at the school premises.

Ridma Tharanga

Priyan Anura Sri will launch another of his All Friends Ridma Tharanga series at the Sanasa Society theatre hall, Egoda Uyana, Moratuwa tomorrow at 6 p.m. He had many shows in the series before and had taken part in stage dramas like Balan Kadathura Hara Dasae, Akala Daruwo, Akunavula and Sammathayata Erahiva.

A panel discussion on 'Global Financial Crisis and its impact with special reference to Australia and Sri Lanka' in collaboration with the Sri Lanka - Australia - New Zealand Association will be held on March 26 from 5.45 p.m. at the BCIS Auditorium, BMICH, Bauddhaloka Mawatha, Colombo 07.

Dialog Telekom PLC donated Rs. 2 million to the Api Wenuwen Api fund on behalf of their customers for the welfare of war heroes at the Defence Ministry recently. The cheque was handed over to Defence Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa by Group Chief Executive of Dialog Telekom, Dr. Hans Wijayasuriya officially. Here the cheque is being presented to the defence Secretary by Dialog Telekom officials.
