Chatura joins a select band of cricketers

Chatura Hemakumara of Moratu Vidyalaya became the sixth schoolboy to
amass 1,000 runs for the current schools cricket season in only fourteen
outings. Thus becoming the seventh cricketer from Moratu Vidyalaya to
achieve this rare feat. Before this Ranjith Fernando, Chandana Mahesh
twice in two successive years Lucky Rogers, Dhammika Wickramanayake,
Amal Peiris and Sampath Perera were the others to achieve it.
Chatura also became the fourth cricketer from his school to score a
double hundred and he joins a select band of cricketers Daya Saman
Fernando, Lucky Rogers and Lakruwan Fernando.
Lucky Rogers, the present Ananda College Coach who recorded the
highest individual score for his school of 264 runs and Chatura are the
only cricketers who had the privilege of scoring a double hundred and
thousand runs in a season in seventy five years of cricket at Moratu
Vidyalaya. Chatura who commenced his cricket career at the age of ten
represented this Alma-Mater in all age groups under 13, 15, 17 and now
first eleven. His march towards this milestone includes one double
hundred, a century and six fifties.
He is a talented all-rounder who has already claimed 67 wickets. He
was instrumental for many a victory for his school thus equalling the
record set by Ananda College for the highest number of victories with
twelve.
He plays club cricket for Old Moratu Vidyalaya Sports Club under 23
cricket tournament and Division two for the Sara Trophy organised by Sri
Lanka Cricket that sharpened his cricketing skills. Even in club cricket
he has done well showing that he can adopt to any situation revealing
that he is a player for any occasion.
When contacted from the Daily News Sports Chatura thanked the
Principal, Members of the tutorial staff, his team mates old boys,
especially his coach Prasanna Dissanayake for his guidance and whole-
hearted support.
