SLMA clinch Uva Rugby Sevens Title

The Sri Lanka Military Academy (SLMA) 'A' Diyatalawa beat the vastly improved Uva Rugby Football Club (URFC) by 7 points (1 goal) to 5 (1 try) in a nerve tingling Sevens Cup Final, while the Sri Lanka Military Academy Combined team beat Badulla Youth RFC in the Plate finals with a resounding 35 points (5 goals) to nil at the picturesque Polo Grounds, Diyatalawa on 14th March. The SLMA 'A' scored a massive overall 128 points in the tournament.

The SLMA 'A' team played a terrific game who confronted an improved Uva RFC outfit. Both sides played an excellent game with bone jarring tackling and hard running.

Before lemons SLMA 'A' went for a try under the posts by their Skipper Officer Cadet A.H. de Silva while Uva RFC were nil. After the turn around the Uva RFC gave a good fight to score the solitary try by Wing three quarter Sanjeewa Hapugaskumbura but the kick at goal went astray. The SLMA 'A' were the winners of the Uva 7's plum.

More than 190 participants from 12 clubs and 4 women's team took part in this sevens tournament which was excellently organized by the Sri Lanka Military Academy initiated by Brig. M. Kumudu Perera (Commandant SLMA, Diyatalawa) and conducted by Uva Province RFU (UPRFU). According to Nelantha Silva (President UPRFU) said that his Provincial Committee conducted this Seven-Side Rugby tournament to promote rugby in Uva Province which was a great success.

The chief guest was Brig. M. Kumudu Perera (Commandant SLMA) while Manoja Kariyapperuma (President Uva Club), Martin Jones (Coach Sri Lanka Army) and Denzil Darling (Secretary UPRFU) also graced the occasion.

The referees from the Sri Lanka Referees Society did a wonderful job, while the final was officiated by Gamini Jaysingha.

Results:

Cup-Military Academy 'A' beat

Uva RFC 7 points to 5.

Plate - SLMA Combined team beat Badulla RFC 35 points to nil.

Bowl - Old Thomians RFC (B'wela beat Hali Ela RFC 7 points to nil. Best Players Award was won by Officer Cadet A.H. de Soysa of SLMA 'A'.
