The UNP’s Western Provincial Council election campaign is dead while
the UPFA campaign is gaining strength everyday, UPFA General Secretary
and Education Minister Susil Premajayantha said.
“This is visible at electoral level. There is no organised campaign
mechanism for the UNP but the UPFA had organised a time frame and was
proceeding towards victory with more and more UNP grass-roots level
supporters and Pradeshiya Sabha members joining the UPFA.
It was the same position, that was seen during the previous
Provincial Councils like in the Central and Northwestern Provinces,”
Premajayantha said. People have recognised that President Mahinda
Rajapaksa’s leadership and efforts to liberate the country from the
terrorists. The UNP has also faced an internal crisis with their
leadership. The statement made by S. B. Dissanayake recently had
worsened the situation and the people have now started to leave the
party and started joining the UPFA in large numbers, he said.
The Elections Commissioner will take a decision on counting the votes
at the polling stations next week, he said. |
