Teacher Promotion Exam
The competitive examination for promotion of teachers from Grade 1 of
Class 11 to Grade One in the Sri Lanka Pirivena Teachers’ service will
be held in Colombo on March 21 and the admission cards for prospective
candidates have already been posted by mail, Commissioner General of
Examinations Anura Edirisinghe stated.
Graduate teachers examination
The competitive examination for the recruitment of Sinhala medium
graduate diploma teachers to vacancies existing in schools under the
purview of the Eastern Province Education Ministry will be held on March
21 at 17 exam centres covering Ampara, Trincomalee, Kandy, Anuradhapura
and Colombo districts. Admission cards have already been dispatched to
candidates, Commissioner General of Examinations Anura Edirisinghe
stated.

Matara High Court Judge Preethi Padman Surasena sentenced Gurusinghe
Tilak who was found guilty of sexually abusing a minor to two years’
rigorous imprisonment suspended for five years and imposed a fine of Rs.
75,000 and in default a further term of two years’ rigorous
imprisonment.
The judge imposed the fine as compensation to the victim.
Applications called for Inventor’s Awards
The New Investors Commission calls applications from new inventors
for Presidential awards and National Awards.
All new inventors who have been granted a patent for their new
inventions last year are eligible to apply.
Students, Technical College students and University students who have
been granted patents are also eligible to apply, New Inventors
Commission Chief Dr. Kapila Perera said.

Fish market nearing completion
The construction work of the Peliyagoda Fish Market in place of the
St. John Central Fish Market, Colombo is nearing completion and plans
are underway to complete the entire construction process by December
this year, Secretary to the Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Ministry G.
Piyasena said.
This fish market constructed in a land area of 7.85 acres at a cost
of Rs. 1500 millions is funded by the Asian Development Bank along with
provision from Government grants.
This massive fish market consists of 148 wholesale and 138 retails
fish stalls with 25 tons of daily output capacity.
Storage rooms, refrigerator facilities, waste water disposal system,
banks, canteens and office facilities for traders together with
facilities for fish exports have also been provided within the complex,
Secretary Piyasena said.
Boost for rural roads
Road facilities in the Hanguranketha received a boost when the Youth
Empowerment and Socio Economic Development Ministry launched a road
development project at a cost of Rs. 4.7 million.
Over 400,000 people under the poverty line in the area have been
immensely benefited with these development activities. Rural roads and
bridges which were in a dilapidated state in the area have been
reconstructed.
The Gonakele Barathi School road was completed at Rs. 640,556 and the
school road at the Merigold watta lower division at Rs. 622,003.
Concrete steps were constructed from Gonipitiya Merigold upper division
to upper main road at a cost of Rs. 469,993 and concreting the kovil
road of the Gonipitiya Merigold upper division at Rs. 559,997.
Buddhist talk
Professor Raja de Alwis will deliver a Public Buddhist talk in
English on “Mindfulness in daily life and Meditation Practice” at a
meeting of the Servants of the Buddha Society on Saturday, March 21 at
4.30 p.m. at Maitri Hall, Lauries Road, Bambalapitiya.
Epasinghe on Veemansa program
Premasara Epasinghe will be featured on the Veemansa program telecast
over TNL TV at 3 p.m. today, March 17.
This program will be telecast on Buddhist Channel (Dialog TV) at 9
a.m., 3 p.m. and 10 p.m.
The presenters of this programme are Shashika Jayathilake (Sinhala),
Sewwandhi Gunawardana (English) and the producer is Krishantha de Silva.
Water cut
The water supply to the following areas will be restricted for 8
hours from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on March 17 to facilitate urgent maintenance
work at the Ambatale Treatment Plant, said the NWSDB in a press release
yesterday.
The areas affected are the Dehiwala-Mt. Lavinia Municipal area,
Wellawatte and Soysapura Housing Scheme. The NWSDB regrets the
inconvenience caused to consumers.
Showers in two weeks

The first inter-monsoon season will begin shortly and there will be
showers throughout the country within the next two weeks, a spokesman
for the Department of Meteorology said.
The low pressure situation of the atmosphere which caused
intermittent rain last week is now tailing off, the spokesman added. |
