The police have shot dead the key suspect alleged to have abducted and killed a six year old girl in Trincomalee, when he tried to escape. He will be buried at public expense after his family refused to accept the body.

Police spokesman SSP Ranjith Gunasekera said the main suspect and five others who allegedly abducted and killed Varsha Regie (6) were arrested by police on Sunday.

“While the police team was accompanying the key suspect Oprin Mervyn to the spot where the girl’s body was found, the suspect had attacked a PC inside the police vehicle and police shot at him when he attempted to escape,” he added.

Varsha, a grade- I student of St, Mary’s College Trincomalee was abducted on Wednesday by an unidentified group while waiting to go home.

The abductors were demanding Rs. One million ransom from Varsha’s parents to release her. However, the girl’s body was found on Friday morning inside a fertilizer bag with her mouth gagged and hands tied.
