Chris DHAMBARAGE
The newly appointed captain of the Sri Lanka team Kumar Sangakkara
said that his prime target is to get his players mentally and physically
fit ahead of the important International Cricket Council (ICC) Twenty20
World Cup which will be staged in England in June this year.
The stylish left hand wicket keeper batsman was always the front
runner to succeed Mahela Jayawardena who stepped down as skipper after
the recent two Test series against Pakistan.
Kumar Sangakkara |
Sangakkara said that they will have a good opportunity of getting
back into the playing field after the unfortunate incidents in Lahore
with the commencement of the SLC Inter Provincial Twenty20 tournament
which begins on March 25.
“My immediate focus is on the ICC World Twenty20 and as we prepare
for this and the year ahead I will be stressing to the players the
individual responsibility they must take on to improve and develop their
games”. Sangakkara who has played a total of 80 Test matches and 246 one
day internationals was also injured in the attack and was hospitalised
after the 25 member team was flown home last Wednesday.
Sangakkara felt that the Inter Provincial Twenty20 tournament will
provide the opportunity for most of the players to fine tune themselves
and prove their capabilities for the national selectors.
He also stressed the importance of having a highly competitive
domestic first class tournament which will be of great advantage for the
up and coming players to make their presence felt.

who is only the second player after Sachin Tendulkar to hold two
cricketing World records.
