Errant traders fined Rs. 3.5m

The Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA) through the investigations of
public complaints has collected Rs.3.5 million by the imposition of
fines from errant traders in January and February.
CAA Chairman Rumi Marzook told the Daily News that the CAA has
received an income of Rs.2.5 million and Rs.1million for January and
February respectively by way of collecting fines from errant traders.
"We received an income of Rs 3.5 million through the filing of court
cases against errant traders in the respective Magistrate's Courts," he
said . The CAA conducted 305 raids in January on the deceptive conduct
and unfair trade practices of errant traders. .
Meanwhile, the CAA is expected to take stern action against errant
traders engaged in unfair trading during the forthcoming festive season.
Mobile vans comprising CAA officials have been deployed across the
country to make consumers aware of unfair trading. "Consumers can
handover their complaints to these mobile vans,"he said.
A number of consumer complaints on the sale of rice at higher prices
have been received by the CAA .
