Petition protesting Dr. Uyangoda appointment

A petition requesting the appointment of Dr. Jayadeva Uyangoda to the Constitutional Council not be proceeded with since he had undergone a prison term of 12 years, has been submitted to Prime Minister Ratnasiri Wickramanayaka.

The Prime Minister has handed over the petition to President Mahinda Rajapaksa, sources said. Speaker W.J.M. Lokubandara had recommended Dr. Uyangoda's name to the Constitutional Council.

The appointment will be made by the President on approval from the Prime Minister and Opposition Leader.

Political sources said the appointment of a person who had undergone a prison term, to a highest body such as the Constitutional Council poses a problem.
