Providing a glimpse of the wonders and charm of Sri Lanka and its
timeless culture and civilization, this event was organized by the
Embassy of Sri Lanka last week at the China World Hotel in Beijing to
mark the 61st anniversary of her Independence and the 52nd year of
establishing diplomatic relations with China.
The Minister said that Sri Lanka - Small Miracle will be launched
shortly and China has been chosen as the first location to go public
with this new concept considering the excellent bilateral and friendly
relations maintained between the two countries.
The Minister elaborated on the uniqueness of this brand package
emphasizing on the diversity and authenticity of the country which packs
in more wonders than any country tenfold its size.
Asst. Minister of Foreign Affairs Hu Zhengyue, the who represented
the Chinese Government on this occasion outlined the pro-active role
played by Sri Lanka in the field of International diplomacy particularly
highlighting the stewardship given to the SAARC process during a very
difficult period associated with the economic turbulence in the world.
The Asst. Minister thanked Sri Lanka for the help during the earthquake
in the Sichuan province in May 2008 and the encouragements and
friendship extended during the period of Olympics. The evening's show
was set against the unique ambience of Yapahuwa, the early 13th century
masterpiece portraying the imperial elegance of its staircase in
antiquity.
This theme of Yapahauwa was particularly chosen in bringing out the
early links between Sri Lanka and China evidenced by the proud pair of
lions at the foot of the stairway having a close resemblance to the
Chinese sculpture. The early excavations at Yapahuwa had also discovered
Chinese artifacts belonging to the Northern and Southern Song dynasties
of the ancient Chinese civilization.
The dance troupe of Channa - Upuli Performing Arts Foundation brought
to life in a spectacular show the ancient and contemporary dance forms
of Sri Lanka.
A display of Sri Lanka's niche products, such as pure Ceylon tea,
spice varieties and gems stones were attractively arranged at the
entrance to the venue combined with a photographic exhibition giving the
occasion a truly Sri Lankan flavour.
The evening was also used as a platform in recognizing distinguished
personalities in Chinese tourism and media for their services extended
to promote tourism and cultural ties between the two countries. Awards
of appreciation were presented to China National Tourism Authority,
Xinhua News, and the China Radio International. |
