He said that at present the activities of ICC Sri Lanka are confined
to a few and do not fully exploit its mandate with ICC. However, with
the new development ICC Sri Lanka will train staff of Banks on the
correct usage and implementation of all their instruments.
ICC Sri Lanka will avail the services of senior bankers within the
country with years of hands on experience. ICC Sri Lanka will also
obtain the services of experts from ICC Paris when needed. The local
bankers thus trained will ensure uniformity in the interpretation of ICC
rules as well as adherence to them, he said. The new venture will coach
local students to sit the Certified Documentary Credit Specialist CDCS
examination conducted by the IFS School of Finance and International
Financial Services Association (IFSA) which is endorsed by ICC.
The local students will greatly benefit by the training they receive
from ICC Sri Lanka according to Jayaweera. He hoped to extend this
service to the corporate and legal sectors too in the near future.
ICC Sri Lanka will issue certificates to those who successfully
complete their training and pass the examination. Certificates carrying
the ICC Sri Lanka Logo will be recognized all over the world.
The major activities of ICC Sri Lanka are as follows:
* Issuance of ATA Carnets, an internationally accepted customs
document which enables the holder to export merchandise duty free and
tax free across borders.
* Conduct seminars on tropical subjects which facilitate
international trade.
* Manage an arbitration centre which undertakes and conducts all
types of arbitration.
ICC, the world business organization, a representative body speaks
with authority on behalf of enterprises from all sectors in every part
of the world.
Today it groups a large number of member companies and associations
from over 130 countries. National committees work with their members to
address the concerns of business in their countries and convey to their
governments the business views formulated by ICC.
The fundamental mission of ICC is to promote trade and investment
across frontiers and help business corporations meet the challenges and
opportunities of globalization.
It has three main activities, rules-setting, arbitration and policy,
because its member companies and associations are engaged in
international business, ICC has unrivalled authority in making rules
that govern the conduct of business across borders. Although these rules
are voluntary, they are observed in countless thousands of transactions
every day and have become part of the fabric of international trade.
