Uninterrupted electricity supply assured

The Ministry of Power and Energy has taken necessary measures to
ensure an uninterrupted electricity supply till such time the country
gets the south-west monsoon.
Power and Energy Minister W. D. J. Seneviratne briefing the Cabinet
on the current situation of Power Supply said that due to the prevailing
drought conditions the country experiences difficulties in power supply.
However, he assured that it was possible to continue the electricity
supply without any interruption.
"If there is a delay in the oncoming south-west monsoon, the country
may have to face a real crisis situation. Therefore, the Power Ministry
and its agencies have taken every possible measure to face such an
eventuality," he added.
He also stressed the need for extreme economy in the use of
electricity.
During the Cabinet meeting, President Mahinda Rajapaksa pointed out
that there will be a bigger demand for electricity after liberating the
North. Minister Douglas Devananda who is in charge of development work
in the Jaffna district noted that Jaffna peninsula is facing an
inadequate power supply.
Minister Senaviratne explained that measures have been taken to
remedy the situation by sending additional generators to the peninsula.
