Navy Rowers dominate at Tissa

Sri Lanka Navy Rowers dominated the Waters of Tissa Wewa on Saturday when they overcame the more fancied Colombo Rowing club to become the overall champions at the Carlton Super Sports Rowing Competion conducted by the Rowing Association of Sri Lanka.

Sri Lanka Air Force and St. Thomas’ College were the other competitors for the Men’s C’ship but failed to reach the final in any of the events. Sailors who managed to beat Airmen and Thomians to enter the final stage had to fight all the way to achieve success as the Rowers from CRC were there as favourites.

In the women’s class, the battle was between the two schools from Colombo, Ladies College and Bishops College. The scull saw Bishops Dimitri Tillekesundaram overcome Ashani Welikala with ease. Though she won her event, Bishop’s Girls failed to achieve success in the other two events Pairs and Fours and went down to Ladies College. The Pairs and the Fours events were closely contested by both teams.

Wind Surfing

Wind Surfing added more colour to the Tissa Wewa on Saturday as the colourfully sailed rafts were handled by the competitors. That thrilled the large number of spectators who rarely get the opportunity to witness this sort of activity here in the interior of the Southern Province.

Chamara Gunewardena controlled his sail very effectively to win the event. He had to face the biggest competition from Priyantha Gunewardena and Pathum Nishantha as they were right close to him from the start to finish. The windy conditions was not the most suitable for wind surfing and the competitors could not reach the maximum speed.
