CEJ writes to political parties
Shirley Wijesinghe
The Center for Environmental Justice (CEJ) in a letter has requested
all political Parties to ensure their candidates at the forthcoming
provincial council election desist from the practice of displaying
cutouts, banners, posters and defacing public places which is
detrimental to the environment.
Provincial Council Elections Act. No. 2 of 1988, prohibits such
practices, the CNJ has pointed out.
The CEJ has drawn the attention of all political parties on Section
71(1) of the Act.
According to the Act, displaying a flag or cutout in any public or
private location except inside the vehicle of a candidate is an offense.
Displaying hand bills, leaflets notices, pictures, symbols in public
places other than at an authorised location for a meeting too is an
offense. |
