Campaign for violence free and peaceful elections

In an effort to secure the principles of democracy by protecting the sacred rights of the citizens of this country, the NGO Consortium for Development in the Central Province which consists of a membership of 18 local Non Governmental Organisations has decided to take action towards developing a culture of violence free and fair elections.

As an initiative the Consortium carried out a campaign at the George E. De Silva Park in the heart of the Kandy city on the February 7 aiming at the Provincial Elections as well.

Several activities were carried out in creating awareness to the civil society as well as the political leaders about the importance of developing such a peaceful election culture in protecting not only the rights of people of this country, their lives and property but also the prestige or the good name of this country.

Chief Minister of the Central Province Sarath Ekanayake, the Mayor of Kandy L.B. Aluvihare, Lal Wijenayaka, Raja Usvetakeiyawa, L. Goonawela were among the speakers representing various political parties.

Gamini Jayaweera, S. Liyanage, W. Weerappan and M. Nilaweera spoke on the objectives of the event and the importance of developing a violence free and fair election culture and also about the responsibilities and rights of the civil society members in such a process.

Along with other activities a souvenir was distributed carrying messages from religious leaders, the Deputy Inspector General of Police Kandy Pujitha Jayasundara and other well wishers.
