Executive Presidency ideal for development - Minister G. L. Peiris

Export Development and Internal Trade Minister Prof. G.L. Peiris yesterday said the Executive Presidency paved the way for the elimination of terrorism and unification of the country under one banner.

The Minister said enormous power revolving around the Presidency gave a tremendous boost for the Government’s mission in eradicating terrorism and people in the country would not allow to get the Executive Presidency abolished under these circumstances. “The Executive Presidency is ideal for the development of the country”, he said. .

Speaking at the weekly Cabinet briefing, the Minister said the North Western Province which recorded 2\3 majority for the Government set a side the earlier assumption that no party can achieve 2\3 majority under the present Proportional Representation system. The Government would have gained a 5\6 majority if the election were conducted under first past the post system.

“The Government can easily achieve 2\3 majority at a future election under these circumstances. Such majority is a prerequisite to overcome a series of challenges facing the country today,” the Minister said.
