Some of the students from the University were holding important positions in the country. The Prime Minister added that relations between Sri Lanka and Russia had always been cordial and Sri Lanka benefited in many fields from the assistance given by Russia.

The delegation was led by Vice Chancellor of the People’s Friendship University Victor Ponka and included among others the Head of the International Department Martyngnko Evgeny. The delegation was in Sri Lanka to brief the Prime Minister and others of the University’s 50th anniversary celebrations to be held in 2010.

Ponka informed the Prime Minister that Sri lanka was one of the five countries selected by the University to brief them of the activities to be undertaken by the University next year when it celebrates its golden jubilee. The University had trained students from over one hundred countries and over 1000 students from Sri Lanka had studied there.

The University would produce a documentary film to celebrate its 50th anniversary and the Prime Minister was interviewed for this documentary.

The Vice Chancellor added that the Russian Government had given a substantial grant to the University in recognition of innovative educational activities and the grant would be used party to expand research and increase the foreign student intake.

The Prime Minister thanked the University for the special honour in selecting Sri Lanka as one of the five countries to send delegations and extended his best wishes to the University in all its future activities to promote the educational and research activities which would benefit countries like Sri Lanka.
