A Shocking Decision
In a surprise move, Mahela Jayawardene has announced that he will
resign as Sri Lankan captain after the upcoming two-test series against
Pakistan. In a statement to the media he has said that this is something
he has been considering for some time as it has been his long held
belief that his successor should have at least 18 months in the job to
imprint his vision on the team for 2011 World Cup.
He has been acclaimed as a great captain and never lost his cool. His
team has won twice the ICC award for the best behaved team on the field.
Mahela is praised for his humility, dedication and strength of character.
His extremely admirable approach to cricket is highly commendable.
Mahela had a very successful career as captain of Sri Lankan team.
Out of the 26 tests he captained, won 15, lost 7 and drew 4. In ODI, out
of 94 he captained won 54, lost 35 and 5 no decision. His test batting
average as captain is 64.70 and his highest score is 374 against South
Africa. One lesson that all should learn from this outstanding sportsman
is; 'don't try to prolong your career with captaincy, it is just a game.
According to reports he would continue to play for his country and he
is assured of at least another 6 years of cricket. Who would want to
miss the services of such a talented world class batsman, Mahela?
