The Junior Tennis Initiative is a programme which targets to enlist
more and more young tennis players into the arena and to popularize the
game among the outstation enthusiasts, is going great guns with the last
few months. So far the programme has seen a big success and around
12,000 mini tennis players and 1200 junior tennis players taking part.
The JTI programme is expected to have some changes with the start of the
year 2009 with the intention of finding more new talents and new
players.
"We need to find more and more new players so that we can have a
large platform of players and we should have a large number playing at
the top level if we expect Sri Lankan tennis to compete with world's top
players.
That is why we took this programme to outstations like Negombo,
Bandarawela, Kurunegala, Matale, Kalutara, Ratnapura, Batticaloa, Kandy
and Jaffna." said Lalith Withana, member of Interim Committee. With this
around 2000 new players are expected to join the SLTA's programme.
"Outstation players have been performing really well over the past
few months and we are really confident of better results from this
initiative," said Bogollagama.
