Hope of light for North

A special accelerated program to provide electricity to liberated areas in the North by repairing and replacing damaged transformers and distribution sub-stations will be launched with World Bank assistance, said Power and Energy Minister W.D.J. Seneviratne.

The Minister disclosed this following discussions held with a World Bank delegation led by Regional Manager (South Asia) Salaman Zaheer at his Ministry last week, a Ministry release said.

The release added that immediate restoration of electricity infrastructure and distribution facilities destroyed due to three decades of terrorism figured prominently at these discussions and the visiting World Bank delegation agreed to provide the necessary funding.

Already, the Ministry has launched a program to develop electricity facilities along the A-32 and A-9 roads and the adjacent liberated areas, the release said.
