Father, son get death for murder

Colombo High Court Judge Deepali Wijesundara yesterday sentenced a
father and son to death after being convicted for murder.
Mahagamage Padmasiri and Mahagamage Priyantha Perera were convicted
for committing the murder of W.A.D. Ranga Pradeep on July 10, 1996. The
two had committed the murder of Pradeep, 18, of Pattiya Junction,
Kelaniya stabbing him with a knife near the railway crossing at Kelaniya.
According to evidence M. Padmasiri 55 and M.P. Perera, 31, of Thorana
Junction, Kelaniya had committed the crime on a previous grudge.
Woman sues Kotte MC over three wheeler fracas

A mother of two filed a rights application in the Supreme Court
against the Kotte Municipal Council for not granting a parking permit to
hire her three wheeler.
Sunethra Hemamali, 42, of Rajagiriya cited the Kotte Municipal
Council, Mayor Swarnalatha Silva, the Municipal Commissioner, the Chief
Minister of the Western Province and the Attorney General as
respondents.
The petitioner stated that she had applied for a permit for her three
wheeler she purchased on a bank loan. This was rejected by the Mayor and
the Municipal Commissioner in violation of her rights.
According to Hemamali, the two respondents had asked her to bring a
letter from the Three Wheeler Operators Society which totally comprised
men who had refused to give her the same. The petitioner stated that she
possessed a valid licence to drive the three wheeler.
She stated that she had been discriminated by the respondents since
she was a woman. The petitioner stated that she supports her two
children and disabled husband.
MC member acquitted of bribery charges

Colombo High Court Judge, Sunil Rajapakse yesterday acquitted
Maharagama Municipal Council member Dayananda Weerakoon on bribery
charges.
The Commission to Investigate Allegation of Bribery or Corruption
filed an indictment against Ranpathiranage Gnanasiri Dayanada Weerakoon
based on a complaint made by his brother R.P.T. Weerakoon. He complained
that his brother (Dayananda Weerakoon) demanded Rs. 200,000 to settle a
matter of unauthorised construction in his favour. But the case could
not be proved as Purasinghe Devage Sumeda, the mother of the two stated
that they were not in good terms for a long time.
Dayananda demanded Rs 200,000 even before the issue of the
unauthorised construction came up. |
