Alert cop saves teenager

A policeman on duty at the Mahaweli bridge at Katugastota on the Kandy-Kurunegala/Kandy-Matale highway, saved the life of a young woman allegedly trying to jump into the Mahaweli Ganga.

A report on the incident said that a female aged 17 and a resident of Polgolla off the Katugastota town had come to the Katugastota bridge allegedly to commit suicide by jumping off the bridge into the Mahaweli Ganga following a dispute with her boyfriend.

The Traffic Police officer on duty at Katugastota bridge happened to notice that she was behaving in an unusual manner. While he was approaching her to find out what was wrong, she was preparing to jump off the bridge into the river.

Katugastota Police are investigating.
