Steps have been taken by the National Building Research Institute to
implement a project preventing landslides and earth submerging in
identified places of Kandy, Nuwara-Eliya and Matale districts with the
assistance of Disaster Management Ministry.
President of the Landslide Study Unit of the Building Research
Institute R.M.S. Bandara said Peradeniya was identified one of the major
vulnerable places for landslides.
"We have taken prompt action to prevent any such situation there", he
added.
Meanwhile, Padiyapelella town one of the trade hubs of the
Nuwara-Eliya district also faces a landslide threat "The BRI had taken
measures to prevent any landslides in the region by the systematic usage
of land and drainage system", Bandara said.
He said a special plan has been implemented in Matale to prevent a
recurrence of earth slips which this area is always prone to. Bandara
said the project would be completed within three years. Rs. 51 million
