Inter-International Schools Athletic Meet from February 20 to 22

The ninth annual Inter-International Schools Athletic Championship 2009 is scheduled to be held on February 20, 21 and 22 at Sugathadasa Stadium. The meet is to begin with a colourful ceremony at 8.00 a.m. with Miss Premila Paulraj Canisius as chief guest.

This year’s meet organised by Gateway International School for the sixth time is sponsored by Edexcel. These details were disclosed at the press briefing held at SSC recently. Chairman of the Organising Committee R.I.T. Alles addressing the media said that the event has taken great strides since its inception in 2001.

He said that young generation should not have only educational qualifications but also getting involved in sports too becomes very vital for them to become good citizens.

Secretary General of the Organising Committee Sunil Jayaweera addressing the gathering said that this year’s event will be competed by over 2,500 athletes from 20 international schools from the island.

He added that this meet has produced good athletes who have reached national level and also had the opportunity of representing the country. They have kept the Lion Flag flying at international meets.

Speaking further he said their aim is to produce athletes to fill the vacancies created by the leading athletes when their time comes to retire.

He also said that the meet will be conducted according to rules adopted by the international and local body for the sport.

The younger generation who are aspiring to become leaders should be trained to become leaders for the future.

This in mind the organisers have given the opportunity for the youngsters to play a vital role in organising the event on an efficient manner with their help.

He also added that all results and other matters connected with the game will be computerised by a well trained set of youngsters. This will help the athletes and all others immensely.

On the final day, the Ambassador for Norway Tore Hattrem will be the chief guest and will give away the awards.

John Edmonds, Manager of Special Projects of Edexcel represented the sponsors while CEO of Pearson too attended the press briefing along with Deputy Chairman of Organising Committee Dr. Harsha Alles.
