Sri Lanka soccer will soon have an Argentina flavour when a top club player Leonardo Guerrero will turn out for the high-riding New Youngs SC, Wennappuwa in the coming soccer season.

This news was exclusively broken to the Daily News by Rohitha Fernando boss of New Young SC during the soccer final between Ratnam SC and Youngs SC played on Saturday at St. Benedict’s College grounds, Kotahena.

Guerrero is from the famous Newell’s Old Boys Club the division one club side in Argentina. Soccer Maestro and now coach of Argentina Diego Maradona also played a couple of seasons for this club.

Rohitha Fernando the former St. Benedict’s College famed soccerite who captained the college in 1984 and played for Old Bens SC in the Bristol League and Bristol FA Cup was instrumental in obtaining the services of the Argentinian player Guerrero to play for New Youngs SC in the Premier League and F.A. Cup championships during the 2009 season.

Rohitha, a reputed businessman who has close links with businessmen in Europe was successful in his bid to get a top club player from Argentina.

Rohitha whose first love is football is a strong and keen promoter of soccer in the Wennappuwa area. He said that his main aim was to promote the game of football. He is the president cum coach of the club and is also funding the club.

Rohitha added that football is the most popular game and the world’s favourite sport. A sport with a long and colourful history. A game so easy to understand and easy to play. Less time consuming and less expensive.

A game played by over 250 million people in 208 countries throughout the world. A game to play anywhere, any time. The FIFA World Cup is the biggest sporting event on earth. The 2006 FIFA World Cup drew 3.1 million spectators to the 64 matches and a cumulative television audience of nearly 45 billion.

Soccer crazy Rohitha’s main aim is to develop this game and take it to the top and to make New Youngs SC a champion outfit in near future. With the Aregntinian player joining us along with the Nigerian player Ifani in our side already the team will be well balanced”, said Rohitha.

Rohitha said that the boys played a grand game in the final of the old Bens SC Golden Jubilee Soccer Tournament despite failing to lift the title.

It was a remarkable performance by our young team to lead I-nil until the 68th minute of the game considering that Ratnam SC team had nine national players. So full credit to our boys and they will continue to show better form.
