Junior women soccerites win to level series

Sri Lanka women soccerites (under 16) came up with a fine performance to beat the visiting Maldivian national team two goals to nil on Sunday at St. Peter’s College grounds. This victory also helped them to level the series 1-1.

Maldivian women in their earlier game, played at Police Park, defeated the local team 3 goals to 1 and were holding an advantage to clinch the series. But the local girls got their act together to put their opponents to the back seat with this win.

At half time the local team was in front 1-0 with the goal scored by Chalani Kumari Ekanayake. In the second session it was Nimesha Madushani who found the net to seal victory for Sri Lanka. Maldivian players were seen having a verbal battle with Sri Lanka Army’s woman referee Chapa Jayasena soon after the game.

A national team should not adopt this sort of tactics as they represent their country as sporting ambassadors and should maintain discipline at the highest level to keep the country’s flag flying high.
