Ninety- nine pc HIV women infected through husbands

There are 1,059 HIV positive cases in Sri Lanka while 186 have died of AIDS. There are 615 women and 444 men among the HIV positive persons, Healthcare and Nutrition Ministry sources said.

The number of persons who have AIDS is 289 and 200 are women. Husbands had infected 99 per cent of these women.

In 2008, 14 had died from AIDS.

During the last quarter of 2008, 30 AIDS victims have been discovered.

In 2007, 348,895 HIV tests had been carried out.

Meanwhile, another Ministry study has found that about 72 per cent of Sri Lankan schoolchildren have engaged in various sexual activities while it is also revealed that 29 per cent of schoolchildren watch blue films and 18 per cent have been addicted to drugs, sources said.
