The annual Donald Steel Trophy international golf competition
organised by the Victoria Golf and Country Resort will be worked off at
the picturesque Victoria golf course at Rajawella off Kandy on February
21.
First competition
Donald Steel trophy will be worked off for the 11th year in
succession with the first competition dating back to 1999. In fact this
was the first golf championship to be worked off at this golf course
since it was opened in 1999.
It must be recalled that Victoria golf course was designed by that
world renowned golf architect Donald Steel in 1997 and built and
maintained to USGA standards. This beautiful golf course has brought
honour to the country by being adjudged as the ‘Best Golf Course in the
Sub-Continent’ twice during its ten year old history by the Asian Golf
Digest. It is also ranked among the 100 most beautiful golf courses in
the world.
Therefore it is no surprise that Victoria Golf Country Resort has
named a trophy and competition to honour Donald Steel who designed this
golf course. There will be other competitions such as Ebert Pot for men
and for ladies Pam Fernando Cup and Victoria Bowl. In addition to this
there will be also competitions such as longest drive, nearest to the
pin etc for both ladies and gentlemen.
Most spectacular
Victoria’s par 73, 6933 yard championship course equals the finest
anywhere. Three of the holes exceed 500 yards and sixth hole is the most
spectacular with its tee set 100 feet above the fairway. To come to
terms with it, a golfer will require drive combining distance, accuracy
and nerves of steel. Such is the challenge offered by Victoria golf
course.
Entry forms could be had from Victoria Golf and Country Resort, Royal
Colombo Golf Club, Nuwara Golf Club or log into www.golfsrilanka.com or
call Dhanushika 947778408 or Mega pro shop.
