Female lobsters face extinction
Raja WAIDYASEKERA Tissamaharama Special corr.
The poaching of female lobsters goes on unabated and soon these
species will be extinct along the coastal belt of the Southern region.
Each female lobster lays 50,000 to 100,000 eggs usually.
The flesh of the lobsters have now become a delicacy for foreigners
and as such there is a big demand for lobsters from restaurants and
tourist hotels.
It is now a money spinner for the low income fishermen. |
