Tiger agent nabbed with GPS, sat phones in India
Indian police on Sunday arrested a Sri Lankan Tamil allegedly acting
as an agent for the LTTE to smuggle goods and electronic equipment to
Sri Lanka.
The agent was picked up at Madambakkam, a suburb near Tambaram.
Police recovered eight pieces of GPS equipment, three satellite
phones, two cell phone repeaters and 500 kg of ammonium nitrate
concealed in his house and also in his friend's house in Acharapakkam in
Kancheepuram district.
According to police, Antony, 32, hailing from Jaffna, arrived as a
refugee with his wife in March this year. After staying in the Mandapam
camp for some time, he shifted to an independent house in Madambakkam
with his family. Acting on a tip-off, the Q'branch conducted a surprise
raid at his house and recovered some of these items, while the rest was
recovered from his friend's house in Acharapakkam. Initial inquiries
revealed that he had got the consignment from a person who had come to
Chennai by air from Switzerland. According to him, he got his first
consignment in August, and the other in November.
He allegedly admitted to police that he had links with LTTE
organisers and that they had asked him to collect the consignment. He
was informed about the arrival of the consignment through mobile phone
and he had gone to collect it from the unidentified person. He had
planned to smuggle the goods to Sri Lanka soon.
