Old Anandians' get-together
Old Anandians' Basketball Wing will hold a get-together in
commemoration of the 80th anniversary of the Basketball Club of Ananda
College on January 3. Being the first school to start Basketball in
1928, Ananda College has one of the oldest and the finest sports clubs
in the island having produced many outstanding players in the local and
international arena.
It will be held at Water World, Malabe. There are over 10,000 members
around Sri Lanka and abroad and the organisers expect to get maximum
number of ex-players to participate in this event.

Maximum security for New Year

Police have taken steps to protect all shoppers in Kelaniya,
Kiribathgoda, Kadawatha, Wattala, Jaela and Negombo during the new year
festive season. Steps have been taken under the supervision of Western
Province North DIG Sarath Jayasundara.
DIG Jayasundara has also made arrangements to ascertain whether the
shopkeepers in these thickly populated towns, pavement-hawkers and
three-wheeler drivers are carrying out the instructions to prevent any
security threats during the new year festive season.
One killed, seven injured in traffic accidents

A 48-year motorcyclist Mohammed Ismail Farook a father of two died
and three other motorcyclists were seriously injured when three
motorcyclists collided at a blind corner on the Horana Road near the
Bolgoda Bridge on Sunday. Meanwhile, four passengers in two motor
vehicles were seriously injured when the two vehicles collided on the
New Galle Road at Moratuwa in Egodauyana on Sunday night.
Unidentified body recovered

Hanwella Police last Saturday recovered an unidentified body of a man
aged about 35 years at Yakabemma ferry in Pahala Hanwella.
The police suspect that the victim had been strangled. The dead man,
about 5 feet of dark complexion was clad in a blue sarong, the police
said.
The body has been sent to Avissawella Base Hospital mortuary for
identification.
The Hanwella police are investigating.
Forging strong co-op unions

The Chairman and General Manager of Matale District co-op unions
formed a new link to find out the common problem they encounter.
A meeting was held at Rattota Pradeshiya Sabha auditorium for which
representatives from Rattota, Pallepola, Dambulla, Naula and Kandy
participated.
They reviewed the progress they have achieved and also discussed new
strategies to make the co-op Movement stronger.
PS road concreted

The road from Napana-Abasingama in Pathadumbara Pradeshiya Sabha area
has been concreted under the “Gama Neguma” road development scheme.
An allocation of Rs. 500,000 was spent for this project, said the
Chairman of Pathadumbara Pradeshiya Sabha S.B. Welagedara.
Plea to repair Kalyana road

Kalyana road in the Sainthamaruthu Divisional Secretariat division in
the Ampara district is in a state of disrepair.
The road has not been repaired for a few years and is full of large
sized pot-holes, which turn in to muddy puddles on rainy days causing a
hindrance for both motorists and pedestrians.
Residents urge the authorities to take action to remedy this soon.
Tarring two roads

Tarring of two roads the Kirimetiyana - Akkarasoowa and
Kahatawila-Nelunwewa in the Wennappuwa electorate is over under the
Maga-Neguma programme.
The funds were allocated by the Wennappuwa Pradeshiya Sabha.
HNB branch in new home

Hatton National Bank relocated its Kantalai customer centre at Main
Street Kantalai. Deputy General Manager Zone I of HNB C. Thambiah was
the Chief Guest.
A large gathering was present on the occasion including Senior
Manager North Eastern Region A.V Beeadle, Government officials, local
businessmen, regional and head office officials of the HNB and members
of the public.
With the opening of this customer centre HNB will now provide
spacious and modern infrastructure facilities to its customers to carry
out their banking transactions.
HNB offers a complete range of services ranging from current/savings
facilities, home loans, credit card NRFC/RFC accounts etc.
Goats sans fodder

Goat farming was a profitable enterprise in Hambantota some time
back.
With the disappearance of tropical dry plants and grass species due
to clearance of land for development activities the goat farming has now
become impossible due lack of fodder.
The goat breeding has now become a non profitable enterprise in the
district also because the goat breeders do not have the facility of
veterinary treatment whenever goats fall sick. |
