More parties to join UPFA for polls - PC Chairman

Many more political parties will form an alliance with the United
People’s Freedom Alliance in ensuring a landslide victory for the
Government at the forthcoming Provincial Council elections said Chairman
Kurunegala Pradeshiya Sabha Patrick Karunasinghe.
He was addressing a gathering of cross overs from the UNP and JVP who
met the Chairman at his residence at Wattegedara, Kohelegedara.
About 2000 UNP and JVP supporters from Indulgoda, Indulgodakanda,
Walpolakanda, Wattegedara Ehala and Pahala Mathawa joined the Sri Lanka
Freedom Party on this occasion and gave an assurance to support the UPFA
at the Wayamba Provincial Councial election.
The Chairman said that during the past the UPFA was the ruling party
of the Wayamba Provincial Council and it had fulfilled the peoples needs
and the people should be satisfied with the implementation programme.
He said the Wayamba Provincial Council brought up the education level
to be second to the Western Province. It had provided textbooks and
school equipment equally among all the schools in the province giving
special attention to rural schools.
It implemented a properly planned teacher transfer system where the
students will be benefited with adequate number of teachers.
“Bringing up the levels of rural hospitals of Wayamba was another
task that was focused on. For example it repaired the Kuliyapitiya
Hospital at a cost of Rs. 70 million. In addition hospitals at Mathawa,
Dambadeniya, Katupotha, Puttalam, Chilaw and Marawila were developed to
meet the demand of the public. For the farmers we have repaired and
restored 66 minor tanks 11 major irrigational schemes.
“Through the Human Resources Authority, NWPC have provided rural
people with soft loan schemes so that they can either build up their
self employment schemes. Transportation is another area which it was
building up throughout the period.”
He also noted that after the discussions with the Minister of
Transport it was able to add 64 schoolbuses to the transport network.
Chairman Karunasinghe said that President Mahinda Rajapaksa has
appointed a National Operations Committee last week to kick off the UPFA
campaign for the North Western and Central Provincial Councils and the
Committee has decided to provide more opportunities for the young
politicians in the forthcoming elections.
